Party Games

Playing party games is a great way to keep your the kids entertained and still keep to a budget. There are a huge number or games and variations to choose from based on your Little One’s age, number of children invited to the party and the preparation effort. It is also a very easy way to bring your party theme to life!

One or two games are plenty for a birthday party. Children would also like some time for free play and to eat the delicious snacks and beautiful cake.

If you would like some help with the preparation, just let us know. We can provide everything you need to play your perfect party games.

Musical chairs is a game where a number of chairs, one fewer than the number of players, are arranged in a circle facing outwards. The players then dance around the chairs while the music is playing. As soon as the music stops, each player needs to find a chair to sit on. The player who can not find a chair is eliminated. One chair is then taken away to ensure there is always one more player than chairs available. The music resumes and the cycle repeats until there is only one player left, he/she is the winner!

Preparation and Equipment needed:
  • A chair or cushion for each child
  • A device to play music
  • A prize for the winner

Variations of Musical Chairs
  • Musical Bumps – Instead of using chairs, the players have to sit down quickly when the music stops. The last player sitting is out
  • Musical Statues – Instead of the players having to sit down, the players freeze when the music stops. Players seen moving when there is no music being played are eliminated. Think about the Bluey intro.

Pass the parcel is a game where children sit in a circle and pass around a wrapped parcel from one player to an other while music is played. As soon as the music stops, the player holding the parcel gets to remove one layer of the wrapping and claim the lollie or prize hidden in that layer . The winner is the child who gets to unwrap the final layer of wrapping and claim the main prize.

Preparation or Equipment needed:
  • A prize, which is then wrapped in multiple layers of paper, small prizes or lollies can be included in each layer of the wrapping. I advise wrapping the main prize in colourful paper and then using newspaper for the rest of the layers. If the children are quite young, different paper for each layer is advisable so they can easily  distinguish between the layers.
  • A device to play music

Variations
  • Instead of adding lollies or prizes between the layers of wrapping, add notes with fun activities, such as ‘Do a funny dance’ or ‘pass the parcel to a person wearing red’

Pin the tail on the donkey is a funny game where children are blindfolded, spun around three time and then asked to pin a paper tail with blutac on a picture of a donkey attached to the wall. The Little One who sticks their tail closest to correct position is the winner.

Preparation and Equipment needed:
  • A picture of a donkey stuck to a wall
  • Paper tails for each child attending the party, the child’s name should be written on the tail to easily distinguish the winner
  • A blindfold, A piece of material or sleep mask are perfect for this
  • A prize for the winner
Variations of Pin the tail on the donkey
  • Pin the tail on the donkey is a great versatile game. Instead of a donkey, you could use any character that applies to your theme. For example Pin the horn on the unicorn, Pin the tail on the dinosaur.
  • To make the game easier for younger children, don’t spin them once they are blind folded.

Hot potato is an easy party game to run which does not require a lot of preparation. Children sit in a circle and toss a small soft object like a beanbag to each other while music is played. The child is holding the “hot potato” when the music is stopped is eliminated. The last child seated wins a prize.

 Preparation and Equipment needed:
  • bean bag to toss
  • device to play music
  • prize for the winner

Variations

Try adding your theme to the game by replacing the bean bag by a stuffed toy matching your party theme.

An egg and spoon race is a fun sporting game where players must race to a finish line while balancing an egg on a spoon. If the egg falls off the spoon, the player must stop to retrieve the egg before they can continue. To make the game more complex for older children, try adding some obstacles to the race course.

This is a great game for an Easter party

Preparation and equipment needed
  • spoon and egg for each of the players (instead of food waste or buying a kit, we have kits available for hire)
  • prize for the winner
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Ring toss is very similar to bean bag toss. Instead of bean bags think small rings.

Ring toss is a great game for a circus themed party as it is one of the traditional games played at a circus or in an amusement party.

Equipment and preparation required
  • rings for the children to toss
  • a target

This is also a very game to theme. Send us a message if you would like some help creating your themed game.

Bean bag toss is an easy game to run and can we left out for kids to explore themselves without much supervision. It involves the little one trying to toss a bean bag to a target.

Equipment and preparation required
  • bean bags for tossing
  • A target

The target can be easily themed or you could just use baskets or boxes that you have lying around. This is a particularly good game for younger children as there is not competitiveness and will save you the cry’s of disappointment.

For my son’s fourth birthday party he requested a running party…..

I could not think of what to do for a running party. He explained it as a game of tag but I am not sure 10 children love the idea of playing tag for two hours as much as my son does. So I thought I would introduce an obstacle course. Very easy to implement in a park or your backyard and the little ones run off plenty of energy. It is also an other game to theme, think hulk smashing a building made of cardboard boxes for a superhero party.

What’s the time Mr Rabbit was called the giant is sleeping when I grew up. They are all variations of the same game and brilliantly need no before thought or prize. You do however require an older child or adult to play along who has a fair amount of energy.

Mr Rabbit stands a fair distance in front of the children while they all stand in a row facing him. They then ask in unison ‘What’s the time Mr Rabbit” Mr Rabbit replies with ‘5 leap frogs’ or ‘3 crab walks’ The children then comply with Mr Rabbits request. This continues until they get close enough for Mr Rabbit to reply with ‘dinner time and chase after the kids to give them tickles.

Preparation and equipment required:

None! 🙂

Variations of this game

The giant is creeping is very similar except the giant faces away from the children and everyone sings together ‘The children are creeping while the giant is sleeping’ as the children quietly creep towards the giant. The giant then spins around and the little ones need to remain very still because the giant can see moving children and likes to eat them. If a child moves they can be eliminated which is a good option for older children. I don’t eliminate children while playing the game with younger ones. The children continue creeping until one of them reaches the giant. They then win the game or become the giant for an other round.
